New developments following Left withdrawal commence (09-07-0

The Left decision to withdraw support is now a permanent feature and has opened a new period of uncertainties along with political developments. The differences of opinions and ideological conflicts over the contentious Indo-US nuclear deal have already seen major developments and the prime of this is the volte face of the Samajwadi Party (SP) who came out recently in all support of the deal. The Left decision has already been conveyed to different relevant sectors of the society and a letter, in this regard, has also been conveyed to the External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee. Though they are yet to relinquish the support formally, it is a settled fact and the formal withdrawal will be on Wednesday after meeting with President Pratibha Patil.

This stern approach also concludes that the scheduled meeting of UPA-Left committee, called by government, on July 10 would be futile since nothing will come out.

The importance of the decision can also be comprehended from the NDA’s decision to convene an emergency meeting where the future strategies are to be discussed and may be formulated.

However, in the midst of all these, SP is resolute regarding its support to the beleaguered UPA government and minutes after the Left announcement, it held a press conference where Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav declared of its unconditional support to the government. All earlier apprehensions of SP, due to the assurances from the former President APJ Abdul Kalam, have gone to oblivion but they in no way would join the government.

Besides SP also flouted the resentment of Muslim community against the deal and stated the country happened to be the first.

This surely indicates that this difference is not going to die down so easily and the coming days will definitely witness more altercations.
